Date: Friday, 01 Jul 2016
Location: Europe House, 32 Smith Square

Summary

The morning meeting will be UCML’s Annual General Meeting for members.

The afternoon workshop theme will focus on the new Modern Languages A levels and how universities can support teachers in the transition to their delivery. Further details will appear here in due course.

Both events are open to representatives of all universities who are members of UCML and all subject associations who are associate members. The event is free to attend.

We do however require you to register your attendance by 24th June in order to provide Europe House with a list for their front door staff and to enable us to order tea and coffee.

We apologise that we are unable to provide lunch, but participants are invited to avail themselves of neighbouring outlets or to bring their own.

Mutual support: schools and universities working together on the new A levels

A successful roll-out of the new Modern Language A levels is clearly vital to future of University Language degrees. New A levels in our disciplines are being rolled out in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, while universities in Scotland are already working in support of teachers in relation to new Highers.

The theme for the afternoon workshop has emerged in part from evidence from Language Trends 2016 (downloadable below) that language teachers in secondary schools are concerned that the new A levels will not motivate take-up amongst their pupils. We shall be focusing on examples where member universities are supporting teachers with the transition to the new qualifications in order to stimulate other colleagues to do the same.
