Following the call for nominations published 28 June 2022, we are pleased to announce that the new Executive Committee representative for Middle Eastern Studies will be Dr Ruba Khamam of the University of Leeds.

Dr Ruba Khamam is Associate Professor of Arabic Language & Linguistics and Translation at the University of Leeds. She is the current Director of Arabic, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies.


At national and international levels, she contributed to the launch of the British Association of Teachers of Arabic, which aims to support and promote teaching, learning, and research in the fields of Arabic language and literature in the UK and beyond. She worked with colleagues from different universities to design the UCML Arabic Year Abroad Resources Pack. Dr Khamam is also a member of the steering committee of the European Network of the Teachers of Arabic.


Ruba obtained a PhD in Linguistics from Linguistics and Phonetics at the University of Leeds in 2012. Her research interests and expertise span across a range of linguistic fields including, Cross-cultural and Inter-cultural Pragmatics, Linguistic Politeness and Impoliteness, (Im)politeness in Translation, Speech Acts, Politeness and Second Language Learning and Use, Teaching and Learning Arabic as a Second Language, and English/Arabic/English Translation.

Dr Ruba Khamam takes up her post from 18 July 2022.
