Less-Widely Taught Languages

This Special Interest group was created in collaboration with AULC to represent the interests of Less-Widely Taught Languages practitioners in UK HE Institutions. The term ‘less-widely taught’ is applied to all languages currently offered in HE in the UK and Ireland except for English, French, German and Spanish.

Membership & Remit

The members of this group will include practitioners from a range of language communities, including university departments, IWLP and language centres. The objectives of this group are:

  • To create a platform for communication, peer support and exchange of ideas.
  • To enable networking opportunities between LWTL practitioners.
  • To share best practice in order to enhance the teaching and learning of those languages.
  • To strengthen the case for teaching and learning LWTL in the UK and Ireland.

Activities

  • Creation of subgroups to represent and support members for whom there is no formal body or language specific teaching associations representing their complex needs.
  • Regular meetings with group and subgroup members to provide networking and collaboration opportunities, and a platform to reflect on the role and future of LWTLs
  • Virtual discussions and contacts via AULC-LWTL@JISCMAIL.AC.UK
