UCFL is strongly committed to supporting and giving a voice to all colleagues working in languages in Higher Education in Northern Ireland. The current UCFL NI Representative is Sharon Jones (Stranmillis University College Belfast). Sharon’s role is to promote effective two-way communication between UCFL members in NI and the other UK nations. UCFL holds two meetings of its Executive Committee each year, as well as two Plenary meetings, usually in January and July. UCFL collaborates with a wide range of stakeholder and professional organisations, and incorporates three very active Special Interest Groups. The Special Interest Groups focus on the Year Abroad (supporting student mobility); Early Career Academics; and AMLUK (Alliance of Modern Languages, Area Studies and Linguistics Subject Associations UK).


There are two universities in Northern Ireland: Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University. In addition, there are two university colleges: Stranmillis University College and St Mary’s University College.


Key organisations working in language related areas in Northern include the Northern Ireland Centre for Information on Languages Teaching and Research (NICILT) , the British Council NI and the Intercultural Education Service.
